Above-Ground Fuel Tank Accessories: A Detailed Guide

Above-ground storage tanks, commonly abbreviated as AST, is a storage unit that serves a wide range of purposes. As the name suggests, these tanks are placed above the ground, no matter the purpose that they are meant for.

According to studies, these tanks are widely used to store fuels. The study further adds that these tanks are used for the purpose, including, but not limited to the storage of oil prior to use, while being used, and before further distribution for commercial and residential purposes.

Usually, above-ground storage tanks have a capacity greater than 55 gallons and may be partially buried, bunkered, or completely buried. This blog provides a list of some of the common above-ground fuel tank accessories and why installing them is beneficial.

So, let’s delve deep!

Best Above-Ground Fuel Tank Accessories

A range of equipment can be installed along with above-ground water storage tanks to improve its operational efficiency. Here are some of the most common ones –

  • Transfer Pumps – Transfer pumps are used to transfer the fuel from a smaller containment such as a tank or barrel to the equipment that’ll pump out the fuel. There are mainly two types of transfer pumps.
  • DC Fuel Transfer Pumps – These pumps are primarily used at construction sites. The compact size and flexibility of these tanks allow simple operation and transportability, even when used during off-site locations.
  • AC Fuel Transfer Pumps – These pumps have been primarily designed for stable and stationary environments. According to experts, these tanks perform best when designed on immobile storage containers, such as on tanks and barrels.
  • Hanging Hardware – Hanging hardware, such as a nozzle or bad hose, are a great addition to any industrial storage tanks; fuel tanks are no exception. A wide array of dispenser accessories are available to suit every unique requirement.
  • Tank Stabilizer – Tank stabilizers or anchor chairs provide secure hold-down for vertical flat-bottom tanks. Additionally, it provides support clearance and elevation for vertical tanks for coned or dished bottoms, with or without connected pipping.
  • Fuel Dispensing Systems – Gas and fuel dispensing systems primarily include tanks and pumps. The platform and tank mounted dispensing systems ensure seamless fuel delivery toward the nozzle but never back toward the storage tank. The tank itself functions as the atmospheric chamber.
  • Tank Anchoring System – The tank anchoring system is designed to secure tanks, separators, and interceptors in underground installations.
  • Oil/ Water Separator – This system provides easy access for the removable parallel plate and Petro-Screen coalesces contained within the separator.

Observation, cleaning, and maintenance can be easily done without emptying the  separator or sending any mechanic inside. Separators are configured          with one or  two rectangular access chambers to allow total, unconfined, unrestricted top access to the separator’s internal part.
